Heran Zhang 张鹤然
Heran Zhang (b. 2006) is a New York based artist pursuing a BFA in Fine Arts at Parsons School of Design.
Ran regards her work as a dissection of how the frame shapes the viewer's field of vision before any act of looking begins. Before anything inside is encountered, the frame has already done its work: deciding what is worth seeing, determining the posture the viewer should assume. This mechanism remains invisible precisely because it operates without friction. Working in oil and refusing color, stripping away decoration and leaving only the black geometric structure of the frame itself forces attention onto what the frame is actually doing. When the frame begins to fuse, distort, and drift from where it should be, a crack forms in the structure. In that crack, the hidden mechanism that has never announced itself becomes visible for the first time.
